Let’s face it: Saxophone is the kewlest instrument ever. Ok, drums are pretty up there too. Alright, so is piano. BUT, there’s something very special about the Saxophone. Maybe the fortified driving air of John Coltrane (NOT KIDDING)... the political prowess personified by Bill Clinton’s sexaphoniness.... and the illustriousness of popular clout clambered by our mainstream hero Kenny G ...
Anyways- I’m catalyzing a SAXOPHONE CHOIR. It’s a group of saxophone dorks getting together to create a circle of saxophone awesomeness. It’s a visionary experience- for the purpose of being awesome- with a secondary purpose of being outlandish in a ‘marching band’ type atmosphere. The basic premise is to coagulate saxophone peeps and organize some basic ‘ditties’ or some song and explore the outer realms of what a group of saxophone nerds can do. What it looks like is: Saxophone players of all levels all ages get together and play saxophone. Senior member invent and teach junior members riffs and invented songs. More of a ‘call and response’ improvisation process than reading codified music etc... The junior members will set up basic funky grooves so the senior members can soar like eagles up above! We, the saxophone choir, name yet to be invented, play parades/gathering, tag team along with the neon bike group and fire dancers... we play Pearl Street Mall if the impulse strikes and such counter-culture events that encourage renegade artistic happenings.

The ideal candidate: One who is committed to the group One who shows up One who can carry a tune- or at lease willing to learn One who is advanced and would be willing to teach beginning/intermediate players the basics One who wants to wail on the saxophone One who is willing to have the most outlandish fun of their life One who wants to meet new and interesting artists and people One who isn’t afraid to wear face paint and a cape One who would consider trying to ride a bike and play saxophone at the same time One who would consider wearing roller skates and playing the saxophone (perhaps a cheap pawn shop saxophone, ya know) One who would contribute their time and energy in a positively and profoundly uplifting way
Here’s how it works and other info: I’m a Professional Saxophone teacher. I don’t exactly want to ‘teach’ the group- but rather guiding the group by delegation to members and providing the space and time for creation!. We would divide the group based upon ability via the SKI RATING SYSTEM- to supply structure and opportunity for growth for every member.
Based upon a ‘soft audition’ I would qualify you into: GREEN LEVEL - INTERMEDIATE BLUE LEVEL - INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED BLACK LEVEL - ADVANCED
DOUBLE BLACK DIAMOND LEVEL - STUD MUFFIN ADVANCED
*each person would select a ‘buddy’ from a lesser advanced level and you would be required to mentor them. The Blue and Black level members would be responsible for inventing basic ‘songs’ or jams to teach the group with an ‘Suzuki/Mimicry/ Improvised” method.
AGE DISCLOSURE AND CONCERNS: Ok, so how about age? All are invited, however parents please be advised that this may be an unruly group with some outlandishness and some venues with alcohol etc. I will require a ‘permission slip’ for anyone 13-18 years old- indicating the person may be exposed to the ‘musicians environment’. Under 13 years are also welcome to join and attend but I would encourage parents to attend rehearsals/performances for ‘parental guidance’. If I were to rate this scene via movie guidelines I would evaluate it a ‘PG-13’. I am giving this disclosure because I’m a teacher and I respect the protective rights of parents. Ok, with that said....
Let’s do this. Yours Truly,
